Staking his claims as one to watch despite being unable to secure a consistent run of form over the 2014 Autumn Carnival, trainer Gai Waterhouse has revealed Hampton Court will contest a 2014 Spring Racing Carnival campaign geared towards the featured Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 11th.
Steadily building to the task in his maiden racing preparation, Hampton Court has not been seen at the races since beating just a single runner home in the Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m) on Rosehill Gardens on Golden Slipper day.
Performing well in two Randwick barrier trials over the last month, Waterhouse told The Daily Telegraph the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) on September 13th with figure as the first major target for Hampton Court as well as stable mate Wandjina, before progression to the 2014 Spring Champion Stakes in October.
“We’ve got two very exciting colts in Wandjina and Hampton Court; they’re both strong colts,” Waterhouse said.
“The Golden Rose is a $1 million race in a month and we’ll head there with both of them. Hampton Court will stay in Sydney and head towards the Spring Champion Stakes, while Wandjina might head to Melbourne for the Caulfield Guineas.”
Finishing second to Group 2 champion and Group 1 placegetter Brazen Beau in the Australian Turf Club Handicap (1100m) on debut on February 5th, Hampton Court appeared well out of his depth when failing to beat a single runner home in the Group 2 Silver Slipper (1100m) on March 1st, but responded well when finishing a close second to Tashbeeh in the Tal Beaumont 2.y.o Handicap (1400m) in his only other race start prior to The Schweppervescence.
Confirmed for a first-up appearance in this weekend’s Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill, Hampton Court is part-owned by media mogul James Packer.
