The Australian Turf Club (ATC) took nominations for a trio of Sydney Spring Racing Carnival majors this morning including 96 three-year-old entries for this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Moet & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).

Running on October 11, the race has drawn two current Group 1 winners including Al Maher three-year-old Almalad.

The undefeated youngster has a trio of wins behind him as he prepares to return to racing this weekend at Rosehill Gardens in the Group 3 The Run To The Rose.

His latest effort took him into the Group 1 winners’ stall at Eagle Farm on June 7 when he held off Brazen Beau to take out the JJ Atkins (1600m) in Brisbane.

The Spring Champion Stakes is one of a host of spring options for Almalad then who is also in the mix for the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) next month on September 13 paying $7 as the equal favourite to win through Ladbrokes.com.au.

In Melbourne the options then include the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 11 and the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 25.

In Caulfield Guineas betting Almalad shares $9 favouritism with JJ Atkins runner-up Brazen Beau and pays $19 as the shortest priced of the three-year-olds in Cox Plate odds for this spring.

Waterhouse plays a strong hand in the Spring Champion Stakes this year too with a total of eight runners.

Among her other big name entries are $21 Golden Rose hope Liberation and Grouip 2 Skyline Stakes winner Valentia who ran a first-up third to Scissor Kick in the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) at Randwick last Saturday.

Other Up & Coming Stakes graduates in the mix for the Spring Champion Stakes this year include runner-up Panzer Division for winning trainer Paul Messara and sixth placed Meursault.

The John O’Shea-trained Meursault is one of Godolphin’s top three-year-olds heading into the spring carnival and the team’s most notable Spring Champion entry along with Shamardal colt Ghibellines who won the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) in March before a Golden Slipper eighth last time out.

Along with Almalad the other Group 1 winner nominated for the Spring Champion Stakes is then the Gerald Ryan-trained Peggy Jean.

The Myboycharlie filly hasn’t raced since her fifth to Go Indy Go in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) when stepped up to the mile for the first time on April 26, before which she won the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on a Heavy (9) Randwick track.

Paul Perry’s ATC Sires’ Produce runner-up and Champagne Stakes fourth placed Snitzel colt Scratch Me Lucky has also been nominated for the Spring Champion Stakes, as has Champagne runner-up Zululand.

Ryan meanwhile has also nominated for Group 3 winner Bachman and Commands colt Washington Heights last seen running second behind Nostradamus in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on August 16.

That was his second career start following a Group 3 second on debut behind Hallowed Crown in the Kindergarten Stakes who also features in the Spring Champion nominations.

See below for the full 2014 Spring Champion Stakes nominations with the final field due out on October 8.
